Why I DECIDED to Run?

I am not looking for a second act. I came out of retirement to DEFEND the town I love and its people's welfare and quality of life from the Sewage Sludge Plant

Long before deciding to seek public office again, I became actively involved in opposing the proposed sewage sludge processing plant because I believed North Kingstown deserved someone willing to step forward and lead. As a private citizen, I produced and distributed more than 1,500 informational flyers to residents, created www.StopTheSludge.net website, organized Operation Sludge Hammer, produced yard signs and educational materials, wrote letters to the editor, interviewed with newspapers and television about the issue, spoke at public meetings, testified before the General Assembly in support of a moratorium, met with elected officials, helped build coalitions with community organizations and public leaders, and helped bring statewide attention to one of the most significant issues facing North Kingstown in decades.
 

If elected to the Rhode Island House of Representatives, I will bring that same determination—and the benefit of 20 years of legislative experience—to the fight. Throughout my Senate career, I successfully led the effort to defeat the proposed Quonset mega-container port at Quonset, restore the Code of Ethics over the General Assembly, stop the proposed Harrah's Casino, strengthen Rhode Island's eminent domain laws to better protect homeowners and property owners, and modernize Rhode Island's Access to Public Records Act.  

Those accomplishments were achieved by building broad coalitions, understanding the legislative process, legislative relationships, working across party lines, and remaining focused until the job was done.
 

The fight against the proposed sewage sludge processing plant will likely be decided during the next legislative session. North Kingstown needs a representative who can be effective BEFORE Day One—someone who understands the General Assembly, knows the legislative process, the law, and the Rhode Island Constitution, has earned the respect of colleagues on both sides of the aisle, and has a proven record of tackling difficult issues and delivering results.
 

If elected, I will work tirelessly to stop the proposed sewage sludge processing plant and pursue meaningful reforms to the Quonset Development Corporation to strengthen transparency, accountability, and the voice of North Kingstown in decisions that directly affect our community. My goal is simple: never again should the QDC be able to advance a project of this magnitude that threatens our health, welfare, drinking water, neighborhoods, and quality of life without meaningful town and public participation.
 

For twenty years, I built a reputation for taking on difficult challenges, building coalitions, and getting results. I intend to bring that same leadership and determination to the Rhode Island House to protect North Kingstown and ensure that the proposed sewage sludge processing plant is never built! 

Of course, if elected, I will work diligently on a varierty of issues to help improve the lives of Rhode Islanders, including and not limited to affordable housing and homes, [and acessable] healthcare and childcare.  I will work to generate good paying jobs and provide people with the workforce development and job skills to make a living in today's economy.  In addition, I will support making out communities more climate resilient as well as promote responsible commununity development.
